NOTES
1. See C. G. Jung, âThe Transcendent Functionâ in CW 8 (1960), pp. 67ff.
2. It is astonishing that Dr. Wolfgang Kretschmer in his essay âDie meditativen Verfahren in der Psychotherapieâ (Meditative Procedures in Psychotherapy), Zeitschrift fiir Psychotherapie und Medizinische Psychotherapie 1, no. 3 (May 1951), in a detailed discussion of the various techniques of Schultz-Henke, Carl Happich, Rene Desoille, and Friedrich Mauz, among others, does not say a single word about the active imagination of Jung, which was developed and made known to the public considerably earlier than the work of the above-mentioned psychologists and had an indisputable influence on them.
3. C. G. Jung, Mysterium Coniunctionis, CW 14, para. 184, pp. 156â57.
4. Ibid., para. 184.
5. âCommentary on The Secret of the Golden Flower,â 1929/1965, in Richard Wilhelm, The Secret of the Golden Flower (New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, 1962), 93.
6. Mysterium Coniunctionis, CW 14, p. 156.
7. See Mircea Eliade, Schamanismus und archaische ekstasetechnik (Zurich, 1957), 38ff. English translation: Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1964).
8. See especially CW 14, paras. 406ff.
9. As far as I know, the exception to this is a medieval text called âHugo von St. Viktorâs Conversation with His Soulâ (Soliloquim de arrha animae). In this text the meditator seems to be so convinced that Christ is the true goal of his own soul that he brings it without force to that goal just through his loving conviction, even though it is attached to the world and vigorously resists conversion.
